One of the many problems the recent economic downturn has caused is that many construction workers are taking on projects for which they may not be qualified. They might be exceptional painters or roofers, but that doesn't mean they can do a good job installing your wood kitchen cabinets. Neighbors, family, and friends can be an excellent source for contractor recommendations and you may even be able to inspect the contractors' work.
1. License - all contractors should have a state contractor's license.
2. Insurance - do not let any contractor work on your home without proof they are covered by liability insurance. If they have employees, they should also have Workers Compensation Insurance.
3. References - you should require a list of references that can be checked even if they were recommended by a neighbor or friend. Circumstances can change and it's nice to know what their most recent customers thought of their work.
4. Contract - no work should be done on your home without a written and signed contract explaining the scope of work, payment details, and the schedule for completion.
There are many highly qualified contractors who can do an excellent job of assembling and installing your RTA kitchen cabinets, but it never hurts to do your due diligence before doing any hiring.
